Flash Fiction: Laundromat at 3 a.m.
Blind Evaluation
Prompt: Write a flash fiction story (~250-300 words) set in a 24-hour laundromat at 3 a.m. Two strangers are the only people there. Include a subtle twist at the end.
The Night Cycle At 3 a.m., the laundromat on Harrow Street held its breath between tumbles. Mara folded a warm sheet, smoothing its corners as if tucking in a child. Across the sticky table, Ellis watched a dryer turn, his socks paired in a neat, pale row. “You always come at this hour,” Mara said. “Quiet suits me.” “No traffic. No lines. No one asking for change.” He smiled without showing teeth. “You always fold things that aren't yours.” “They leave them. I finish them. It feels rude, leaving a job half done.” A buzzer sounded, though no drum had stopped. Neither moved. Mara shook out a blue shirt, then a small dress patterned with lemons. She folded each with ceremony, stacking them by size. Ellis refolded what she finished, undoing nothing, learning the creases with his palms. “My hands don't get tired anymore,” he said. “Mine either. That part's kind.” Ellis laid his last sock pair atop hers. “How long do we keep doing this?” Mara placed the lemon dress squarely on the pile. “Until someone finally comes to tell us the building burned down.”
